Here's my layout, help me pick some plants!

chrsmtclfFebruary 24, 2007

I recently moved into a third floor apartment, and I'm ready to plant some plants. I've never grown plants before (this is actually my first place), but I love cooking and I have a good idea of what I want. I drew up a three level planter (shown below) with the following plants in mind:

On the bottom, chili peppers. I've read that they grow 18-24" (specifically jalapeno peppers and other similar peppers)

On the top two, herbs. Basil, Oregano, Mint, Thyme, Cilantro and so on.

All of this sounds easy enough, however, my balcony faces north-northwest. As you can see in the image (below), I've got plenty of shade, but not a lot of direct sunlight. Are the plants that I've picked going to havve any chance of thriving or surviving?

The picture below shows two possible locations, but I'm probably only going to have one planter. I'm looking for input on the planter design, location, and the plants that are going to go in it. As I said, I've never done this before. :) Thanks in advance.

Nice diagrams! All of the plants you've listed really need full sun. Mint, however, will probably do fine. I had some growing in a location where we eventually added on a deck, and even though it's quite shaded, it continues to grow. It's kind of sprawling though.

Hi chrsmtclf and welcome! Sounds like good planning on your part and a nice selection. I face NE and have a similar situation with respect to positioning plants to get the sun they need. I would probably recommend that the pepper/herb planter go on that W side (in the position to the left in your diagram). That way you may get some morning sun and some good afternoon sun in summer. This time of the year, the sun is lower in the sky but rising so you'll find by mid-summer, you'll probably get alot more sun, even in the morning, in that spot.

I got my veggies seeds in this past Friday and can't wait for spring to get here!
