Four O'Clocks - Broken Colors vs Kaleidescope

rosieo(7 NC)February 12, 2009

What's the difference between these two varieties? The catalog pictures look just the same. I had Kaleidescopes last year, this year they're harder to find but Broken Colors looks like the exact same thing. So, what's the difference?

I'd venture to guess same plant. Found a seller over here, but still looks like the same thing you can get locally. Most of the references I see have a slash: Broken Colors/Kaleidoscope, which gives me reason to think that they are often referred to as either, but are actually the same thing

My analysis is that the 'Broken Colors' don't have the stripes and/or speckles of the 'Kaleidoscope' blooms. The former has different colors on each flower, but they are solid colorings. This must be the distinction between the two types.

My above distinction may be wrong. Was looking at my Thompson & Morgan catalog yesterday, and I noticed their picture of 'Broken Colors' showed color streaking in the petals. Maybe streaked and solid versions exist for BCs; maybe they've used the wrong picture. What's your opinion?
