? about Snapdragons

mori1(5b/6a)March 24, 2011

Last year I got some annual snapdragons I have never been interested in them before, but I got them free with my purchase. So I planted them and found that I really like them. I even collected seeds which I have started indoors. I also got the perennial snapdragon planted in the fall. Well, I was lazy and didn't bother pulling up the spent plants until Monday. At least I tried to when I discovered new growth. At first I thought it was a seedling until I saw that it was attached to the main plant. I'm in zone 5 is it normal for annual snapdragon to return like this?

Yes, it is completely normal for snaps to overwinter. They are quite hardy.

Snapdragons are perennial, in some climates they may not be winter hardy, but that does not make them annuals. I planted Antirrhinum majus last summer and they have been blooming for the last month, even though we have had many frost this winter. They also start easily from cuttings, so when you pinch them back, start more plants. Al

Thanks for that comment, Al. I have got into trouble in the past for trying to encourage accurate termiology.

Here is a link that might be useful: Tender perennials ar not annuals.

I agree, too, flora. Your definition of 'annual' in that attached thread was exactly right.

Pity I can't type though isn't it? 'Ar' is not some weird UK spelling - it's just me being useless.

I don't expect 100% accuracy from the casual gardener. What I do expect is correct nomenclature from is the commercial seed sellers who list perennials in the annual lists. It is frustrating to go through the perennial plant list and not find the seeds listed, then go to the annual list and find they DO sell the perennial you are looking for. Al

I think it's calledt a half-hardy annual. It doesn't reliably come back in Z7a where I used to live, is a thrill when it does.
