growing plants on shaded balcony facing woods?

pilmanAugust 10, 2014

I'm not sure if this would work but I live in a second floor apartment and I have a balcony but its facing a creek with woods and while some sunlight gets through, it's not direct. I have heirloom tomato, zucchini, jalapeo, squash and a few others I want to grow but I don't know if the lack of sunlight will limit me or not.

Those veggies are all full-sun plants. Sorry about that. Strawberries can grow in partial shade but I've been told they need about six hours of direct sun to do well. Some kinds of ornamental asperagus do fine in shade but the edible kind also needs some direct sun, as I understand it. If you live in a warm winter zone, you might want to look at tropicals, including coffee and cacao. But those are a heckuva challenge.
