starting petunia seeds

deveMarch 11, 2010

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I should do with my wave petunia seeds. this year I tried something different and I started all of them in one big flat. On one side I have 50 purple and the other side I have 50 plum vain in the middle I have 50 coral. Both sides are up about an inch but the middle has hardly started.Should I uncover them and take them off the heat pad or will it be okay to leave it the way it is.Also should I put the grow lights on timers or leave on for 24 hours.

Definitely remove the humidity cover. You can put them under the lights, but mist the ones that haven't come up 2 or 3 times a day with a spray bottle, so the seed stays moist. Planting different seeds in one big flat isn't the way to go. There was probably a few days difference in germinating time for the plum vein and that's how you run into problems.

Yes your lights should be on timers. Plants need to rest just like we do. 15 hours of light is what they should have.

oilpainter is right on...

Is there anyway to get the middle ones out into their own container now? They are probably pelleted seeds that need high humidity to 'crack' open.

If you can not get them out, maybe you could lay a piece or glass or clear wrap over the 'un-germinated' ones to help keep the humidity high?
