Purple stem sunflower

statenislandpalm7a(7a)June 12, 2011

Hi I have been growing sunflowers for a few years now and last year I saved my seeds from my russian mammoth sunflowers. They may have been crossed with local sunflowers. This spring One sunflower seedling showed purple stems a characteristic that i have seen before but it usually fades.

originally the whole stem was completly purple

Curious, did you have a frost or near frost several days before the pictures with the purple were taken?

albert no there was no frost. I know cold can cause some purple in plants but its been 80 or above for most of the past month and its still purple.

It flowered

I think it is a hybrid between velvet queen a variety that is short branching and has brown flowers and Russian mammoth a tall variety that I grew last year and from which I collected seeds from. the result was a tall, branching, 2 color sunflower.
