Avocado Tree in my zone?

mike1994(5)January 3, 2009

I live in northwest Indiana, 30 miles south of Chicago. The winter weather here is typical Chicago weather - COLD.

Could an avocado tree grow here? If not, would one grow inside my house? I have a south window that "could" be made available. I would want this tree to bare fruit. I love avocados. I'd be willing to put in the work "IF" it was possible to do in the first place.

It certainly won't grow outside. Avocado's are very frost tender. They won't even grow in many areas of California where you can grow citrus. You might grow a small tree in your house. But you are unlikely to grow any fruit. Avacado are large trees.

OK, I'm ready to hear the sad news.

Is there no way I can grow a fruit producing avocado tree where I live - indoors or out?
