Evergreen Blackberry?

jtburtonFebruary 10, 2013

Well, I know it's not an evergreen, but I thought this was interesting. My Kiowa blackberies have kept almost all of their leaves the entire winter. In fact, about half of the leaves on the lower part of the plant have remained green all winter despite the temperature dropping to the single digits several times. All of my other blackberries have responded as I would have expected and have either dropped most of their leaves or the leaves have dried up and/or turned a dark purple. The kiowa's are green and soft, just like you would expect during the summer. Thoughts?

Same here for my chester in zone 4. Even if they look ragged, most seem to recover. ITs an interesting plant (and tasty)

It's only the Kiowa blackberries and these are supposed to be a more southern variety. I'm in zone 6A/6B, so it is generally below freezing most of Jan and Feb. In fact we had a 2 day period last week that went from 67F to 7F in 48 hours. Crazy.
