Elektra apple

jwalker5666March 18, 2014

Anyone have any information on this apple variety? Got scionwood from GRIN and only information I could find was a nursery out of Canada that reports it to be an offspring of Cox. Was surprised at how much scionwood they send you so I'm trying to decide how many grafts to make.

The story of Elektra:

Since the middle of the 19th century, European apple breeders have had one preoccupation beyond any other: to take the amazing flavour of CoxâÂÂs Orange Pippin and emulate it in an apple tree thatâÂÂs easier to grow, has a longer season, is more productive or has other advantages over the legendary Cox Pippin.

ItâÂÂs been a remarkable " and fairly successful " effort that has resulted in some nice additions, even if none can quite match the flavour of its original inspiration.

Elektra is one of the best of these varieties, providing a commendably delectable apple that reaches its peak in eating quality about a month and a half after harvest.
