Berries/veggies

caseafincherMarch 27, 2013

Hi!
I'm new to gardening, and well everything about it.
I just moved into my first house and i would really love to plant and grow some berries and vegetables that will produce food this summer. Strawberries, raspberries, black berries, etc.. but, i have no idea what i'm doing. I have lots of space to grow things though.

Any information is appreciated!
Thanks
Casea

Based upon the amount of sunlight that an area gets, plan your plant beds. Some info:

most berries are from best from plants.
For Blackberries, choose the thornless variety. They require a support (like a tressil) to grow properly, as do respberries.
Strawberries are basicly ground cover. Choose a bed where you can frow them for a few years. They will spread and their best production comes in year 3 and 4. Take a look at my message in the "Edible Landscape" forum for some more ideas.

You can do searches on the internet for how to grow brambles, raspberries, etc. Check the ones from universities, and garden blogs. The "EHow To" sites are extrememly basic, skip those. Berries are a good place to start. Raspberries, blackberries. Strawberries are a little harder. You also have to figure out what will grow in your area, what cultivars (varieties).
