Name this plant?

Mint.Tea(5)September 18, 2013

I've found these enchanted looking little sprig like plants growing on the path in my woods. They're numerously growing together in various parts of the woodland...but not as the same plant. The leaves are a simple oval shape but a pointed tip. They smell divinely. JUST like Peppermint..or spearmint. But the roots smell more that the actual leaves. I would love to know what this is. (hoping it's wild mint) Though I looked up pictures of wild mint and it can't be this. Wild mint leaves are more like domestic mint..bigger and the plant is in a clump together. And also if it is edible or poisonous. And what I do with it.
I've included a picture hopeful it's helpful...:)

This would be very appreciated.

If the stems are square, that would indicate it is some form of mint.

if it smells like mint AND has a square stem its a member of the mint plant family. this family contains many culinary and medicinal plants. many mints interbreed readily, there are a gazillion (real number : ) variations.

to tell pepper from spear mint...

peppermint leaves have a small stalk connecting them to the main stem.

spearmint leaves connect directly to the main stem.

consider checking it out further at the usda plant database here. the genus for these plants is Mentha

good luck!
