What is wrong with this cherry tree?

HappyBallz(9A/B Valrico,Florida)March 22, 2013

I noticed some hard dark-lacquer like areas on couple of branches of my cherries.

No gum coming out of them...the buds still did not open so should I prune it off and latex-paint the cuts?

Looks a little like canker to me... any ideas?

Are the dark areas sunken? If so probably bacterial canker. If not I'm not sure, hopefully nothing. Cherries are very short lived in the humid south.

It looks like the necrosis you get from canker without the gum.. my guess is also a canker of some form. Cut into one and see if the wood is dead under, if so its almost surely canker and should all be cut out.
