General apple tree pollenation question

missemerald(7 (Virginia))April 29, 2012

I'm looking at apple trees-- I have learned enough from this site to know NOT to get them from the big box stores (thanks!)-- but what I wondered was apple trees need pollenators. Does it matter which kind? We want an apple for the yard-- narrowed down to Goldrush-- but don't necessarily have room for two trees. My neighborhood, however, has TONS of mature crabapple trees (two next door, two across the street for starters) along with other apple trees a block or so away. Would these do as pollenators?

Also, my kids are requesting a pear tree. Not that I'm going to get one but same question-- do they need specific pollenators? There are a few in my neighborhood within a few blocks but none directly next door. They put out a lot of pears and are usually individual trees with only one per yard. Do the pollenators need to be very close, or will a couple streets away be okay?

Looks like pollinators are in your neighborhood, so yes, you only need one of each.

You might want to look at the scab-resistant apples at Edible Landscaping in Afton VA. The Liberty variety is late but excellent for us. Whatever you do, get a cultivar with high ratings for scab resistance.

We have a single Potomac pear that sets fruit just fine even though its pollination partner got taken out years ago. Either it's self fertile or there are other compatible pears around here.
