Apple Ceder Rust - Can Ceder Boards Cause it?

bencjedi(6 - Central Kentucky)April 2, 2014

I am building a raised bed immediately next to my espaliered apple trees (out of largely aluminum) but would like to attach wooden boards above the aluminum to the corner posts of the bed to increase the height of the bed. I have read that ceder is bad for some apple trees (like my young espaliered Goldrush) as it causes ceder apple rust, but in searching for information no one mentions if 'dead' ceder is susceptible to causing the condition. Can I use ceder boards immediately next to my apple trees or does apple ceder rust only apply to living ceder trees? Redwood is not available afford-ably in my area. Thanks

Nope. you have to have living trees to host the disease.
