New strawberry plants when to put in ground?

sunnibel7 Md 7(7)April 6, 2012

I just bought a "bundle" of strawberry crowns (called Eros, which I haven't heard of before). The nursery had potted them up in one small pot, and they are leafing out pretty strongly, but I am not certain that we are past getting freezes here. I have just lost a lot of spring crops to unpredicted freezes (peas, cabbage, favas, turnips which should have been hardy through the upper 20s died on nights when the predicted temps were 37 and it is a mystery to me and the 80 year old farmer who used to own our land, but that's another story) and I can't seem to track down info on how cold young strawberry plant foliage can take. Should I put these young plants in the ground now? Maybe try to individually pot them before they get too far along and plant them in a couple of weeks? I don't really have the means to do that, but... I do have some insect barrier row cover, but I think that only gives one to two degrees protection. Thanks for any suggestions and information you can give me.

Ken, I said they are leafing out strongly, but maybe that got lost in the rest of it. So this is new growth, not dormant.
