Mango tree is to tall.

ack01April 27, 2013

I have a mango tree that is around 35 feet tall. the lowest branch is at about 14 feet off the ground. the squarls get all of my mango before they are even close to ripe. I have 100's of half eaten mangos all over the ground every year. I was wondering if I could trim the base of the tree down to 8 feet so I can start defending the tree from squarls and reach the mangos when rdy

I had a mango grown from seed in a pot, squirrels took 7 out of 7 mangos the first year it fruited, and they don't mind it green at all.

Don't know myself how aggressively they can be pruned. In my experience, they don't tend to develop a lot of shoots from low on the trunk, so they might not take to drastic pruning so well, but I'm just guessing. Most trees surprise me with how well they handle pruning.

You don't have an excess of squirrels, you have a deficiency of roast squirrel recipes.
