reconditioning raspberries

ljpother(3a)April 10, 2012

I cleaning out my raspberry patch. After I cut out last years bearing canes, there isn't much left. I have a few plants around the yard I can put in; but, should I dig up the patch and put the canes in a pretty row. The patch is at least 5 years old and I have have lost some to drought and disease.

Also, the canes are in a row in a raised mound (about a foot high and two wide). I'm not sure why this was done. The patch has been there long enough for canes to move downslope away from the centre.

Raspberries will live longer in very well-drained soil, that may be why they were planted on mounded dirt.

If your zone 3a plants are not showing any signs of new growth yet, you can dig & move, otherwise wait until late fall or before the ground freezes again.
