Flower buds on my just-planted cherry tree

fruitmaven_wiz5(5)April 21, 2012

A month or so ago, I brought home a bare-root Danube cherry tree (not a sweet cherry, I think it might be a Duke. It's not supposed to be super-tart.). Anyway, it was about 5' tall with several branches. I pruned it to 4' tall, and cut off all but three well-placed branches. It is starting to leaf out, and I see a dozen flower buds! Would it be terrible to try and get a few cherries off it this year? It's self-fertile, so it shouldn't matter if there are no other cherry trees blossoming now. I really hope it sets a few fruits :)

Sure,..they might not set anyway, if they do, snip off at pea size most of them, just leave on a few.

Agreed. Danube isn't a duke, some catalog listed it that way but its a morello type (red-fleshed) sour.
