branches sprouting below graft

jimfnc(7aNC)April 7, 2013

put new hosui pear from Stark. They marked the spot for ground level. Am getting several what would be branches sprouting below the graft, which I know should be removed. Have never have a new tree sprout out like this, with 6 or so sprouts.
It is also sprouting (normal) above the graft as well.
Any concerns? The graft is a good 3 inches above ground level.

Nope...cut them off below the graft and let it go... I've noticed some of my pears like to grow below the graft...just keep an eye on them.

You might have to prune those low sucker shoots off several times a year for the life of the tree. They might be nuisance but at least they are ground level where it is very easy to prune them off periodically.

Yup, its just the rootstock trying to assert itself. Prune them off whenever you see them.
