i need some help with this pear tree

sara7worthington(5)April 30, 2013

hi i recieved this pear tree in the mail a week ago. it is just a whip and about three feet high. it hasnt started to bud yet but it is alive.the question i have is there i knot of some sort about three inches from the top is kind of flimsy and it would break real easy if any pressure is applied.so can i just cut the tree off below the knot. that won't hurt the tree will it.i am in zone 5 or 6 depending which planting catalog you look at but i live at the bottom of michigan.

Is there a graft at the base of the trunk near the roots? It is possible the "knot" you see is a graft of the variety that you wanted, but typically the nurseries will place this graft at the base of the trunk, not 3 feet up. I just want to make sure we don't lop off the desired variety! Assuming the "knot" is a disease of some sort and not a graft, then it would be best to cut it off. But if it is a graft, then no!

Cut it just above a bud that's facing north if possible so it grows straight.
