Collette Pear - Is this a canker?

aphahn(6a CO)April 1, 2013

Inspecting my Collette getting ready for grafting season I found this wound. Is this some kind of canker? My knee jerk reaction is to prune it out, but I thought I would get input from other folks as the tree is still small and I'd rather not start chopping out branches yet.

Aphahn,
Not exactly sure what you have there. My colette's have taken a long time to get going and are being given the heavy mulching/nitrogen treatment. They aren't vigorous. I have had similar lesions on my colette too and have pruned them off. Your's could be physical injury though. Not sure.
Do you spray?

Whatever it is it looks too minor to be concerned about it at this point.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'm just a little jumpy about it as I'm grafting a couple of fireblight susceptible varieties this year.
Noogy, I don't spray. Aside from fireblight, there isn't a great deal of need for it here.
I can't say my Collette has been vigorous, but then again it is on quince C. All in all I have been very happy with it, the first crop was 3 years after grafting and at 5yrs old it is about 8ft tall and loaded with fruit buds. The pears are delicious to boot.

At this point, I think I will assume it is winter injury, and keep an eye on it.
