Streptomycin- Fireblight?

Randy31513(Georgia 8b)April 17, 2012

I noticed the Streptomycin label says don't spray when fruit is visible.

My Fuji and Jonagold have both set a few fruit a couple of weeks ago so they are marble size apples but still lots of blooms.

It should rain soon and it is in the low 80s.

Should I keep spraying for fireblight?

I just sprayed it last evening. I also have small fruit that just set. I just assumed they were talking about larger, more developed fruit.

The only reason I have heard not to spray later is to avoid too many antibiotic sprays and thus the possibility of resistance to antibiotics developing (which has in fact occurred in several places already). Spinosad has a limit on # of sprays for this reason. In the latest Fruit Grower I was reading about how all the roundup spraying has caused roundup resistant weeds to develop.

Scott that makes as much sense as anything. The last Fireblight spray should be my last for this year anyway.

Everyone keep their Streptomycin in their fridge?

I do. Mine hasn't seen much action for the last few years since fireblight is mostly under control for me now. I don't get any blight at bloom, its only later in the summer that I get a bit.
