What is eating my pluots?

brownmolaApril 29, 2013

So this is the first year that I will get a significant pluot crop and I'm really excited however I'm noticing lots of the pluots seem to have some type of bug damage on them.

Is this damage totally superficial and won't affect the quality of the fruit when it ripens?

If not, can anyone tell me what is causing it and how to stop it?

That is strange looking. Doesn't look like recent feeding damage. The fruit will probably ripen properly and will taste like undamaged fruit. The only issue might be increased fruit cracking.

A lot of the pluots have a little crater in them and a few others have more of a path chewed out that looks like something burrowed/ate across the face of the fruit. I had been plucking off the ones that showed the damage but maybe I'll just leave the on and see what happens.

Probably some caterpillar ate on the fruit when it was small. Pull off what you can but leave a normal crop load. I think you'll be happy with the fruit.

That looks like a cluster that I would thin, and in so doing remove the most blemished pieces of fruit.
