Bird Nest-Will they keep other birds away from peach trees?

garedneckApril 19, 2012

I have birds building a nest in one of my 30 fruit trees (peaches, apples, cherries, etc.). Should i leave the nest and assume the parent birds will drive away all the other birds and thus it would be to my benefit to allow the nest? This way the trees within a maybe 40 foot radius maybe won't lose fruit to other birds?

It's all a matter of preference. I personally have been attacked/dive-bombed to many times and always take the nests down if there are no eggs.

I do understand your view of the mother keeping other birds away but we're not talking about a hawk nest right?

Sure...I would leave the nest alone.

They are Robins, but wish it was a red tailed hawk. FYI- I was thinking about ways of attracting hawks to keep the squirrel population at bay and went to the birds of prey show at Callaway gardens (must attend if you like birds of prey as they fly them right over your head), but the trainer really didn't have any concrete advice for attracting hawks.

Not sure, but may end up removing the forming nest as i don't want to spray the birds with pesticide when treating the peachtree.
