Somethings gnawing at my strawberries

mpalermoMay 22, 2012

I've noticed a few of my strawberries lately are looking chewed up. I put a net over them to make sure that the birds aren't getting them. I went out at night and found a few of these bugs eating at the berries. Anyone know what they are and how to get rid of them?

Earwigs!! There are products with spinosad, or many others at any garden center to use.

You also can trap earwigs at night in rolls of wet newspaper held together with rubber bands. As morning comes, they crawl inside the hole in the middle of the roll for easy collection. Other good traps include shallow cans (cat food, tuna) baited with a 3-way mixture of vegetable oil, molasses or corn syrup, and salt water, set in the mulch like slug traps. The sweet syrup attracts earwigs, the oil prevents escape, and the salt water drowns them.
