Pruning a Reliant Peach Tree

maplerbirch(4)May 29, 2012

Being this far north, we know very little about peach trees. I'm not the only person I know that has successfully grown the 'Reliant', only to kill it with pruning.

I have another one growing now and it too seems topheavy with lots of crossing branches that should be cleared away, by my way of thinking. I do not trust my way of thinking when it comes to peach trees anymore.

If this were an apple tree I would simply cut out the center and trim away errant branches while dormant in the Spring. What can safely be done with a peach tree that needs pruning? Thank you. :)

Thank you for the response, but my system is close to useless for watching videos. I was hoping someone who has successfully pruned peaches might provide me with a little insight.
I think I'll do it in the dormant late winter as with apples.

I'm really curious why we killed the previous ones though. Mine was leaved out already, not sure what season the other person had pruned in, but hers died too. :)
