Red Bartlett question

Dan.NYMay 16, 2012

Will the green bartlett pollinate the red and vice versa? Or are they essentially the same tree and cannot pollinate themselves?

I believe that the red bartlett was a mutation on a normal bartlett (there is a technical term of this, but I cant remember it right now). IF that is the case, I would assume that it wouldnt, because I dont think bartlett is self pollinating.

Bartlett is self-pollinating, at least in zone 6 and warmer climates, but supposedly sets more fruit with another pollenizer. It may be self-pollinating in Z5, I don't know.

There are numerous "Red Bartlett" sports, just like there are numerous Red Delicious sports and Fuji sports. Sports won't pollinate each other.

I have a Max Red Bartlett and a regular Bartlett. The Bartlett is very productive, but the Red Bartlett is not (generally doesn't need thinning).

I have a three tiered espalier comprised of Bartlett, Red Bartlett and Bosc. Last year I only got Bartlett and Red Bartlett flowers but still got a couple Red Bartletts. I assume that the Bartlett pollinated the Red Bartlett since I'm not aware of any other fruiting pear trees around.
