Need pear info quickly please!!

canadianplantMay 4, 2012

My first attempt at grafting failed (birds). Im not being forced to buy another pear tree. There are 2 varieties available for me: Red Bartlett, and "john".

The Bartlett is rated zone 5, according to net sources. So Ill skip that one.

I seen some "John" pears, but cant find anything online at all. The one site I did find was from Saskatchewan, which means its more then likely hardy here (I dont get nearly as cold here, or as long as they do there).

I dont know if "John" has sweet fruit, size (fruit and the tree), growth habit, planting recommendations, or anything really. Just that its apparently VERY hardy, and VERY resistant to blight.

I want to get the tree ASAP, so id appreciate any help I can get.

Linked below is the info NCGR has on it.
St. Lawrence Nursery, in Potsdam NY used to carry it, but I don't see it in their current online catalog.

SLN's description,from the '98 catalog is:
John - P.ussuriensis/P.communis cross. Extremely hardy and very fireblight resistant, but only fair quality eating. Quality better if grown in the far north and eaten when perfectly ripe.

Here is a link that might be useful: 'John' pear - NCGR Pyrus
