Pruning advice needed for young apple tree

peachymomo(Ca 8)May 18, 2012

I got a Thornberry benchgraft from Greenmantle three years ago and I transplanted it from a pot to the ground this year. It was 6' tall and had no branches so when I planted it I cut it down to about 3.5' and it's growing new branches now. The new growth looks pretty crowded to me and I'm wondering if I should thin the branches this early, or if I should just wait and let it grow for a season first.

Here are some pictures:

Thanks in advance!

If mine I'd leave alone and choose scaffold limbs next winter. Leaving all foliage will speed root growth. The crotch angles look good and will make a good tree.

I suggest you pinch back all but your leading bud at top of tree to maintain central leader and the dominance of the bud going most straight. You can let the rest of the tree grow for now as long as nothing threatens the dominance of the leader.
