Blackberry & Red Berry Mites - Is this picture the mites???

scuzzynuttyMay 25, 2013

I've had a redberry mite problem on my blackberry bush for the past 2 years losing half my crop. Finally decided to do something about it this year and I've been spraying Neem Oil twice now the past 3 weeks.

I see all this tiny black stuff on some of the leaves, are these dead redberry mites, or does anyone know what this is? The attached picture is a macro pic...

Thanks.

No not mites...leaves are probably a little sticky so detritus is sticking to them. The black stuff does look like insect frass though.

The frass indicates you have some chewed leaves above the frass deposit.

Mites would more likely be a pale color and no larger than the whitish specks on your leaf. When alive, they scurry quickly, can traverse a whole leaf in a few seconds.
