when to graft on to rootstock?

oldryderMay 26, 2012

i have 1/2 dozen cherry trees where the tree died but I have robust new growth from the rootstock.

in an earlier post I was advised to bud graft on to the rootstock "in July".

just wondering of this years early season (my trees are at least 3 weeks ahead of normal) means I should start the grafting earlier.

what are the indicators for time to graft?

as always thx for suggestions and advice.

Last year I believe it was in July i chip budded apricots, peaches, apples...almost everything took and I've seen some really good growth. You want to keep that bud dormant until next spring. I plan on doing the same thing for this year... I have a ton of budding to do because I want to make some multi variety trees with a bunch of peach seedlings (plum/peach/apricot)...see what takes and what doesn't. I wish i could throw my sweet cherries on them too.
