Can this lemon tree be saved?

44David2May 16, 2013

This lemon tree has suffered, and I think the cause is that it has a pot (and maybe soil) that doesn't drain well. The soil stays wet for a while. The leaves yellowed then dropped. The spot also gets a lot of sun. If I get a new pot for this could the plant come back?

It looks like it is trying very hard. Stress causes masses of flowers; the plant thinks it is dying and tries to make seeds (fruits). Water it carefully and give it a shot of foliar food and a little Nitrogen in the soil (urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, etc. If you give a Meyer... which this clearly is... too much N when it is blooming, it tends to drop the flowers and produce leaves. Only after all the flowers have fallen, give it some balanced citrus food and then take off any tiny lemons that have formed; they will only steal the energy the plant needs to recover. Re-pot to a bigger pot only after new leaves and branches begin to sprout. BTW, if you post this on the citrus forum, you will get lots more help.

It sure has a lot of flowers!

It can't be entirely moribund.

Look up 'Al's Gritty Mix' recipe and plant it in that mixture in a larger, fiberglass pot (or plastic).

On the Cloud Forest website, they are either recommending Foliage Pro or Azalea fertilizer for Citrus. They said there isn't a decent Citrus fertilizer out there. Brady
