Lawn sprinkler spraying cherry tree trunk

ribs1May 27, 2012

Just wondering if this is a problem. My lawn sprinkler spray the trunk of my 3 year old cherry tree. The bark seems soft afterwards. Tree seems otherwise very healthy. Should I redirect the sprinklers? Put on some kind of tree protector?

The water shouldn't hurt it, but i'd worry more about the amount? IS the tree going to drown? How wet is the soil? Is it just hitting a part of the root zone or the whole thing? Cherries (sweet?) need water, but not too much.

I don't think the amount is too much. I try to give me lawn and inch of water per week. If it rains, I turn off the sprinklers.
The tree is in the middle of the lawn. It is a montmorency tart cherry.
