Just Planted Heritage Raspberries - Prune Now?

Dave16002May 8, 2012

I just planted some heritage raspberries a couple of days ago. I got these from a local nursury. The plant is currently about 12-18" tall, and appears to have a few small buds on it.

Should I cut these to the ground now, or am I too late for this season? If I prune them now, will I still get a late summer/fall harvest? I'm not concerned with missing out on 2nd year fruit if it will still produce later in the summer.

You won't get much of a crop til the 3rd year. Don't prune anything this year, because if you do get a crop, it will be on the canes that are already up. In my experience, no new canes will come up the first year, and next year you will get a few new canes up. The third year is when it really starts to take off.
