planting apple trees question

I am very worried about the apple trees I just planted. We dug out a large hole with a circumference of 3 ft., but the surrounding dirt is pretty hard. Should I replant the trees after adding several layers of good soil (build up the bed, sit the trees up higher).

Hope to hear soon. I do not want these beautiful apple trees to die!

I would just water in well and cover with a mulch (keeping a couple inches back from trunk). Adding amendments is controversial with the seeming majority saying better to keep with just the natural dirt there. I would leave them be as long as they were planted at the proper depth. I'm not an expert though.
