Does anyone know anything about 'exbury' kiwi and especially ripening times compared to 'saanichton' or 'blake'?
Its supposed to be in a similar window, it is one of the supposedly earlier-ripening varieties. I will know this fall, my Exbury is blooming for the first time.
I added the new El Dorado kiwi from the USDA this spring, its a chinesis thats supposed to ripen very early. We'll see.
Thanks for the info. That is good news about your exbury blooming this year. I remember you were growing 'blake', is it also blooming this year?
I planted the Blake a year or two later and its still pretty small with no blooms.
I ordered a exbury from Raintree and it has about 6 blooms open now. I never realized before how attractive kiwi blossoms can be. Since I have no male kiwis blooming it will be interesting to see if any fruits form. Of course being in a container they may abort anyway.
Following up on this.. Exbury is no earlier than Saanichton, both are still hard and sour. Exbury is a lot smaller, maybe 1/3 the weight per fruit, so its not looking super good at this point. I will pick the fruits before the first deep freeze and put them in the fridge and see how they are in February.
Thanks for the updated info on Exbury - doesnt sound all that great! I did not get a fruit to form on my potted specimen - no real surprise there. Did you get a good crop on saanichton this year?
Yup I got a ton. It produces well every year, the only wait is for it to get going. The fruits are bigger than the grocery store version as well; they taste about the same.
How was the taste of your 'exbury' kiwi and how would you rate the flavor compared to 'saanichton'?
Shane, it was not all that different. All the green fuzzies I have tasted are similar to the store kind. The only downside to it looks to be the size.
This spring I see first blooms on my El Dorado. This is supposed to be an early-ripening excellent-tasting yellow kiwi. Blake looks like it will need one more year before flowering. It was in a shady spot so its not really its fault.
