Bright orange streaks on young apple tree?

lauren.sims03May 8, 2014

I found some bright orange streaks on the underside of some new leaves on my Jonathon apple tree in my backyard. The tree was planted about 2 months ago from bare root stock, and it's just leafing out for the first time in my yard. Any clue what this could be? I searched pictures of apple rust, but it didn't look what I have going on.

Keep an eye on that. I don't know what it is, but looks like something I had an issue with last fall on some small trees and was only saved by the trees going dormant. no sign of it this year yet. I showed photos but never got any ID on it

I found a reference to fire blight, but to be honest I do not understand it. It reads, "Frequently, the tip of the blighted shoot bends over and resembles a shepherd's
crook (Figure 3). Hawthorn leaves turn yellow, then
brown, shrivel, and fall prematurely.

I don't understand the reference to hawthorn. Maybe someone else can give more knowledgeable feedback.

Thanks for the response. I'll keep an eye on that for sure... I just noticed it on another leaf cluster, so maybe I'll take the pic to some local places here in PA and see if they can help out.

seal it in a ziplock bag, if and when you transport it.
