Ants damage apple trees?

oldryderMay 3, 2012

Having my usual spring battle with insectisoids.

great progress against the tent caterpillars via BT courtesey of advice from various members here on the forum.

thees are leafing out, some are just beginning to flower.

trees are in their 4th spring, all are mulched liberally with wood chips.

Now I notice some trees with some curled and browned leaves. All the affected trees seemed to have ants on them. No obvious evidence of anthills at the base of the trees.

suggestions anyone?

Ants will farm aphids... I had issues in the past. You can use tangletrap or whatever that sticky goo is call...you put it around the base of the tree. I used it on some peach trees last year because ants were attacking my nearly ripe peaches.

Uncurl the curled leaves. The aphids and their carcasses are inside.

Next year, look at your apple tree earlier in the season. As soon as you see aphids on the backs of the leaves, squish 'em or wash them off.
