need advice on pears plums apples etc

kawaiineko_gardener(5a)May 1, 2013

Typically the stuff that grows well in my area for fruit trees is apples pears pawpaw kiwi plum cherry and apricot

I know in some areas of southern states they struggle to grow well there.

I'd like to grow the listed varieties in either central GA (zone 8a) or northern GA (zone 7b).

My concern is central GA.

Can the fruit trees listed above be grown well in central GA or will they be more fussy
and difficult to grow cause of the summer heat?

Would I have to get low chill varieties of the fruit listed, or could I do the conventional varieties?

If you send your request to the university extension service in the county in Georgia where you wish to plant, they will furnish local lists of the fruit trees fruiting in that area. This free source is not used as often as it should be. Al

Everything you listed will do well in the south, except cherries
and maybe kiwi's in zone 8, unless you have a micro climate that will accommodate kiwi's. This is a blanket statement, because
you must choose varieties that will do well in the south.
