Deer destroyed berry plants

Brett-CpGJune 24, 2014

Gah. The deer finally (after 2 months) have discovered my raspberry/blackberry plants. 3 in pots, 4 in ground. Ate all but one plant completely, leaving only the stems. They're all first year canes on root balls that I planted this spring.

Berries are supposed to be tough....will they be okay? Most of the plants have virtually no foliage on them. Will be taking some precautions from now on.

If they were looking good, I expect they will be fine.

They will be ok if the deer don't keep on doing it.

They should eventually come back but may be delayed a year or two as the roots are not being energized via lush foliage.

What else have the deer eaten in your location?

The main way things die from deer is they get eaten over and over again. Nearly any plant will bounce back from one eating. This spring I had a new apple graft the rabbits got; before I realized it was rabbits they got it again. I finally protected it and its just starting to come back now, I got lucky.
