Bizarre Bumps on Asian Pear

EggieRoweJune 18, 2014

My computer won't let me upload the picture to this site for some reason, but I have immature asian pear fruits covered in these orange bumps. This is the first year this tree has fruited, so I don't know if this is normal or not. I know the mature fruits have a speckled skin, but these are raised bumps - like eggs. It's all over one fruit and above the stem, on the stem of a second, and nothing on the third fruit (though the third fruit is misshapen). Is this normal or some kind of disease/insect problem?

I'm sure someone else can answer with more knowledge and certainty than I can, but I saw something similar on my Asian pears (the very, very few that survived the mid-April freeze.) It looks just like the rust I commonly see on mayhaws and serviceberries, so I assume it's rust disease. My pears have been fruiting for about 5 years now and I've never seen it on pears before.
