Trellis advice for arctic kiwi and schisandra vine

milehighgirl(CO USDA 5B/Sunset 2B)June 22, 2012

I want to know how sturdy I will need trellises to be for my arctic kiwis and schisandra vine. I was originally going to put them on just wooden trellises that one buys for such things as clematis, and I'm having a hard time visualizing how large my little vines will be when mature.

Do I need to trellis either of these similarly to how I would trellis grapes?

Yeah, the kiwis will take over the world. I think that the A. kolomikta species is less vigorous than A. arguta, but both get pretty big.

My hardy kiwi have escaped their rather large trellis and basically eaten a telephone pole next to it. Yikes!

My only experience with the Magnolia vine has been just the opposite. It has been very slow to grow, finally achieved about 6-7 feet tall after about 6-7-8 years, and seems fine on a regular sized trellis purchased from Home Depot.
