I have a nectarine tree does not put a lot of branches and leaves. Newly grew branches are between 6- 12 " long . What should I do to enough it to grow another 6-12" ?

I fertilized it in ealry spring, is it too late to put more fertilizer?

If they've stopped growing then trying for more growth this year might not help next years crop. The late growth might not set many flower buds. And if you have peaches on the tree trying to push new growth with water and N may decrease eating quality. That much growth will still give you a good crop next year. And you could push growth early next year if needed.

Fruitnut, I am not really trying for crop. This tree is so small and so few branches. I try to make it a little bigger and full.

I read different message through internet search, some said can fertilize till end of July, some said only fertilize once in the spring. I understand the risk of late season grow . My biggest question is whether the newly grown branches will be old enough for the winter if I put some liquid fertilizer when I water the tree .
