Postmortem: what happen 4n1 cherry tree?

FruitNewbieNYC(7b)June 2, 2014

It's a 4n1 cherry tree in 7 gallon pot from home depot. Planted in 20-inch terra cotta pot with standard off-shelf potting mix. Bud break fine with only 2 flowers, all the sudden leaves turn yellow and wilt. Dig it out take picture of the root system. Noticed it never break out the original root shape.

Question:
1. Is this phytophthora root rot?
2. did i water too much?
3. any suggestion if I try again?

Thanks in advance

Alex

It was probably too wet. Regular potting soil often doesn't drain well enough for fruit trees. Plus you probably should have spread the roots on the potted tree. Next time get a bare root tree in winter and use a well drained mix like the 5-1-1. You can read about that on the container forum.

Also when there are no leaves on the tree you only need to water maybe once a month or less. Only water when the mix has dried some to the touch.
