Spice Z Nectaplum fruit issues

chadinlgJune 4, 2012

I have a 4 year old Spice Z Nectaplum which is a very pretty tree, but the skin of the fruit looks like it gets infected by fungus each year (covering roughly half the fruit surface. I have regularly sprayed for peach leaf curl each fall/winter and the foliage is almost entirely clean, but the fruit seems to be particularly susceptible. I don't have a picture on me, but the appearance is irregular in shape, brown and rough.

Anybody else fighting this ?

I have used both copper type and chlorothalonil based spray.

Those in my greenhouse look pretty much the same way. Sort of a mixture of russeting, like on a pear, and a reddish/purplish blotchy over color. I'm not concerned as long as the fruit doesn't crack. I think it's normal but probably influenced by environmental conditions. Russeting on many apples is strongly related to humidity and other factors.

Hmmm... I have been doing some more homework and based on images online I think I am seeing the results of thrip damage.

The suggestion is to spray at petal fall with Spinosad based spray.

You might well be right. But if the fruit doesn't crack it doesn't matter. Unless you are trying to win 1st place at the county fair.

I have had bad thrip damage on Desert delight and Artic star nectarine. In the nursery I buy trees from I are a couple of nectaplums and they had thrip damage. I need to spray earlier myself to head off thrip damage.
