Holes in apple Tree Bark from ???

oldryderJune 28, 2013

See pics. There are a couple dozen apple trees and a few cherry and plum trees in the same area as the apple tree in the pic. Most of the trees are much younger (2-4 years old vs. 11 for the one in the pic.)

questions:
1. what's making the holes?
2. how big a problem and how to treat? (OK, that's 2 questions)
3. are other trees significantly at risk from trhe same pest?

as always, thx for help.

Looks like humongous holes made by a sapsucker.

Agree, sometimes I use wire mesh to cover up a section, here a yellow bellied sapsucker on a Spruce Tree.

It sure does look like Sapsucker damage.

I didn't realize that they would hit trees that are that small.

I've already covered the tree trunk with metal screen. Now I have to watch to see if the miscreant decides to pick another tree. If it does it might be time for the BB gun.

I'd put a hole in the back of the sapsucker's head about the same size as the ones he put in that tree.

Unreal, apparently they cant just stick to POS white pines.
Sorry to see this man, I hope your tree recovers OK.
