Strawberry Problems

Eppy888June 2, 2012

I have two problems with my strawberries. The first is that the fruit is looking, weird- like in the picture below. It is only like this in a couple of the berries, but I wanted to know if I need to be concerned about it spreading. Is it a disease, or bug?

Secondly, I some of the flowers have bloomed and as they begin to mature they dry out before they reach their strawberry form. The two pictures below shows this problem. On the same plant I have full strawberries, so I don't understand why some dry up and some don't. Advice would be greatly appreciated!

Are the berries like the one in the first picture being exposed to more sun than others? It could be sun burn... Could also be something fungal, but not really sure. I would cut the ones like that off when you see them so the plant can put its energy towards the good berries. I also like to put straw mulch around my plants because the light color helps prevent sun scald and reduces ground rot.

Just found this article, and a couple of the pics look similar to your berries, so maybe it's thrips...

Hmm , well thanks for the information. I'm gunna keep my eye out for thrips and probably try putting some mulch down. It is only two berries, but still. Do you have any idea about the dry flower stems?

I would say it probably did not get pollinated properly and the plant aborted it. Could also be frost damage from earlier in the year.
