Woolly Apple Aphids / Root Pruning

crystalgarden(7a)June 26, 2012

I was digging around the roots of one of my apple trees and I noticed one of the tree has or once had a woolly apple aphids infestation and galls all over the place. So I pruned the surface roots off, they basically snapped like a dry twig. They didn't seem all that large either. Was this a bad idea? The tree seemed not as vigorous this year, the leaves smaller and not as green. Will new roots sprout? The tree is about 3 or 4 years old and an espalier.

Some of mine look like that. It's debilitating for the tree and over time the tree may decline. There's not much you can do accept look for a resistant rootstock if you need to replant.

This is an MM111 rootstock and supposedly had good resistance, lol. I think I might try to graft some on M.106, it's sounds more resistant.

My MM111 isn't doing well either. I'm not sure if it has aphid as they are all in-ground. On some potted trees I have aphid on M7 and Geneva 30. There are no aphid on MM106 and Geneva 11 that I can tell.

Here's a link to info about Geneva rootstocks. They do say that G30 isn't resistant and G11 is...so my observations appear good.

Here is a link that might be useful: Geneva apple rootstocks
