Anybody know anything about these new Nects

olpea(zone 6 KS)June 12, 2013

I got an inventory list from Adams County today. They had some new nectarines I've never heard of available for next spring. Anybody know anything about them? Specifically things like sub-acid, bacterial spot resistance, and perhaps size - since some nects seem to be extremely small.

Ambre - I do know this is a sub-acid nect, so I doubt I'm interested in it.
Avalon - Don't know a thing about this one.
Carene - Don't know anything about it.
Nectafest - I think this is the same Necta Zee from Zaiger Genetics? I've heard Necta Zee mentioned on this forum before. Anyone growing this one in a humid climate? Bac. spot incidence?

They are also offering Summer Beaut for next spring. Hman has raved about this one, so I'd like to try it.

Zaiger will release something for sure. The CA Rare Fruit Society released two nectarines last winter, well first I saw them. One was Red Raspberry, developed from white peaches that tend to have red streaked flesh, like the Indian peaches probably. The other I forgot the name of? It was an all yellow skinned nectarine. Offered at Raintree, but they no longer have them listed. Both hardy, but untested about anywhere. Sounded very interesting to me.

When they develop more disease resistant nect, I'd be interested. I had to take both of mine out.

Frank,

As far as I could tell Adams isn't offering any new peaches. They offered Winblo last year, but I don't see any on the list this year.

I haven't tried to grow pluots (bloom too early here) so I haven't paid attention to what they've offered in the past. This is what they currently offer for pluots/apriums (for next spring):

Dapple Dandy
Escort
Flavor Grenade
Flavor Heart
Flavor King
Flavor Gem
Flavor Queen
Flavorich
Honeyrich
Tasty Rich
Westcot

They start selling out about this time of year, so if you plan on ordering anything from them, now is probably the time to do it.

Olpea-

Thanks.. I'll have to make up my mind soon then. I grow them in pots (pluots). I had a few pluot seedlings out last winter...they all died!

olpea:

In case you haven't seen it bacterial spot resistance is rated in their catalog.

Nectafest is a USDA release out of WV and is rated 7 for bacterial spot resistance, pretty good. Only Avalon and SilverGem are higher at 8. Carene and Ambre are also a 7. So the ones you listed are about their best nectarines for BS resistance.

The ones I like of Zaigers are rated 5 and 6.

Thanks for the heads up about ordering. I requested an inventory list today.

Does anyone know where I can find a Mango Nectarine tree, I don't have the proper name, I have bought the fruit for the past 7 years or so in stores here in Az. but have never had luck locating a tree online I know they are coming out of California...most likely a protected variety.

Maria's Gold sold by Raintree is one of those all-yellow nectarines. There are several of them, all I have tried taste similar.

I did not see anything online on the ACN site about the rootstocks for those pluots - do you have more information that that?

You'd think they were on Citation or maybe Lovell?

eboone:

The pluot on ACN inventory list are all on Citation. Most of the other stonefruit are on Lovell, Bailey, or Myro.

ACN is about a 2.5 hr drive from my home-I wonder if they have a few bigger pluot specimens they would sell and load into my truck? Might be worth calling...
Thanks for the info fruitnut! And olpea!

Scott:

You say the all-yellow nectarines like Maria's Gold taste similar, but you didn't say whether they were similar = Yummy, or similar= Nyeah!

Are they worth growing, flavor-wise? (at least for those of us with the climate for nectarines)

Thanks!

Carla, they are sweeter than most nectarines but with a touch less flavor. I enjoy them as something different. Unfortunately my Tashkent Gold cracked far too much and I got rid of it; in your climate it should do fine. I also had different varieties from other sources and the taste was similar.

Thanks fruitnut. I don't know that I have their latest catalog and I didn't see the info. on their Website, so your information was very helpful.
