Black Satin Blackberry - Only 1 New Cane

lawanddisorder(6)June 21, 2013

I have a Black Satin Blackberry plant that looks pretty healthy, but it only has one new cane (I think called primocane). I got the plant this year and it has about 4-5 second year canes (floricanes).

I'm concerned that there is only one new cane for next years berry production. Will more continue to grow throughout the summer?

Should I prune the tip of the new cane? It's much taller than the canes that are fruiting now. Will that encourage it to send up other new canes?

If you got a smaller plant to start with it takes two or more years to get a lot of berries.

Pruning the tip of the lone primocane is not likely to spur growth of more canes, but it will cause lateral branches to grow out of the main cane.

If those floricanes are short and spindly, the whole thing was probably dug not long ago, and as Scott said, it will take time for the clump to get going. That's a fairly large pot, but it may hinder production long-term. Put plenty of composted manure or other fertilizer on it in the off-season, November through March.
